Reporting

Early detection is critical to managing invasive species. The sooner a new species is identified after introduction, the more effective response efforts can be. While early detection can be challenging, public reporting plays a vital role in improving our ability to act quickly. In Ontario, sightings can be reported through several tools, including EDDMapS, iNaturalist, and the Invading Species Hotline.

EDDMapS

EDDMapS (Early Detection & Distribution Mapping System) is an online mapping platform that requires no technical expertise. To submit a report, simply take a photo of the species, open the EDDMapS app or visit EDDMapS.org, select the species observed, and upload your sighting. Reports are immediately forwarded to trained verifiers for review. Once confirmed, sightings are added to public distribution maps that help researchers and managers track invasive species and inform response efforts.

iNaturalist

iNaturalist is a global online platform that records observations of all plants and wildlife, including invasive species. To report an invasive species, take a photo and upload it through the iNaturalist app or at iNaturalist.org, selecting the species observed. In Ontario, invasive species reports submitted through iNaturalist are automatically added to the Invasive Species in Ontario project. Data collected through iNaturalist supports a wide range of research, monitoring, and conservation initiatives.

Please note: your invasive species observations added to iNaturalist are bulk uploaded to EDDMapS, but not vice versa.

Invading Species Hotline

The Invading Species Hotline is a key resource for reporting sightings and obtaining reliable information, particularly during periods of heightened public concern. Members of the public can call the hotline to speak directly with an invasive species expert to report a sighting or ask questions. Information provided through the hotline is used to track the distribution and spread of invasive species. When reporting, having a photo available is strongly encouraged to support accurate identification.

Please note: If your hotline report involves a high-risk species, your name and contact information may be shared with invasive species partner organizations to support rapid response efforts. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
